EUROPEAN DOCUMENTATION CENTRE (EDC)

Identity - Objective

Panteion University’s European Documentation Centre (EDC) is part of the network of approximately 400 European Documentation Centres, 9 of which are located in Greece, tasked with the particular goal of facilitating the public’s access to information regarding the European Union and its policies; EDC assists Panteion University, including other Universities in Athens, in their educational and research work.

The Centre is one of the “specialised” EDCs, which, as opposed to “general” EDCs, accepts selective documentation. This choice was made at the time the first contract to establish the EDC was signed, in line with the interests of the University. It includes documentation on EU institutions (structure, operation, activities, reforms in progress), EU Law, EU policies, particularly those concerning the single European market, the EMU, employment and social policy, common trade policy and EU external relations.

In addition to the aforementioned material about the EU, EDC is the only Documentation Centre in Greece that receives publications by the World Trade Organisation (WTO), and has, since 2001, been receiving publications by the Council of Europe.

EDC Events

The following events were held under EDC’s activities:

  • European Information Cycle (series of lectures, speeches).
  • Cycle of Day Conferences on the 20 years from Greece’s integration in the European Community.
  • Cycle of Seminars on Community documentation and access to European databases.

Backed by the Department of International and European Relation and in the framework of a broader effort to familiarise interested parties with the policies of the EU, EDC organised a series of seminars on accessibility to and search within European databases.

  • Seminars on Community terminology in English.

The aim of the seminars was to provide post-graduates students specialising in “European Administration and Politics” and “International Law and Diplomatic Studies” of the M.A. programme with scientific information about the use and translation of Community terms into English.
